Intellecap’s direct support to ventures in East Africa

Intellecap was founded in India in 2002 and combines advisory services, capital and networks, providing early stage impact ventures with a continuum of support through their life-cycle and addressing systemic barriers at industry level.

4/05/2018

Intellecap established its office in East Africa in 2015 with the intention of replicating its offering in India while adapting it to the East African context. Intellecap’s direct support to impact ventures in the region covers one-on-one investment readiness support services; showcasing enterprises during the annual Sankalp Forum, celebrating their success stories and helping to attract capital for these enterprises, and facilitating investments.

Our role

Itad was commissioned by Argidius Foundation to conduct an evaluation to assess the results of Intellecap’s investment readiness support in East Africa to enterprises over the period 2016-2017, supported by the Foundation. The evaluation will assess the relevance of these investment readiness services, firstly, to enterprises and, secondly, to investors; Intellecap’s contribution to short and longer-term outcomes (including revenue growth, job creation, investment raised); and the factors that have influenced outcomes – positively and negatively. The assessment will also consider how the investment readiness services are positioned within Intellecap’s ‘ecosystem development’ mission.

Objectives

The evaluation is primarily for the purpose of learning: to review the performance and progress to date of Intellecap’s direct support to ventures in East Africa to generate lessons for Intellecap, Argidius Foundation for future programming. The evaluation is also designed to input into wider external learning across the Argidius portfolio, and to contribute to the sector-wide evidence base on investment readiness initiatives, including to the Global Accelerator Learning Initiative (GALI).

Itad is currently undertaking this assignment and has completed the inception phase of the evaluation, during which the team conducted initial consultations, including at the 2018 Sankalp Forum, supported Intellecap to articulate their theory of change, and finalised the evaluation methodology.
