Meet Itad’s evolving philanthropy support team

We are delighted to welcome Kecia Bertermann and Michael Moses to the Itad team as we expand and deepen our work to support social impact actors in their efforts to navigate increasingly turbulent contexts.

Itad supports values-driven learning, strategy, and action for impact in complex environments. As our partners — philanthropies, governments, multilateral institutions, and other social impact actors — work to address systemic issues and drive long-term change, we help them use evidence to make sense of what works, how and for whom.

Our role often involves supporting strategy development, facilitating reflection, and embedding strategic learning processes that facilitate collective action in dynamic contexts.

Today, many social impact actors are grappling with growing uncertainty and a rapidly shifting aid and development landscape. Traditional models of aid are being questioned, funding mechanisms are evolving, and the scale and complexity of challenges continue to accelerate. These developments have consequences for all of us committed to advancing a more equitable, sustainable world – and foundations are no exception.

In fact, foundations today are under increasing pressure to demonstrate impact while simultaneously navigating political, social, and economic volatility. These conditions demand new ways of thinking, learning, and adapting. We understand that the way through these challenges is to work within this complexity: to think systematically, invest strategically, and apply learning in pursuit of transformative change.

To support this growing area of our work, we are delighted to welcome Kecia Bertermann (Associate Partner) and Michael Moses (Deputy Director) to lead Itad’s philanthropy support team.

Meet Kecia Bertermann

Kecia Bertermann joins us from her role as Director for Impact and Learning at Luminate, where she led evidence and learning across a diverse global portfolio. Kecia brings deep expertise in using strategy, evidence and learning to support complex systems change.

She is also well known in the digital, gender, and MEL space, having served as Director of Digital Research and Learning at Girl Effect while also leading research on the digital divide and adolescence & cognitive science.

Kecia recently participated in our panel event ‘Exploring new technical innovations in MEL for systems change’, where she spoke about the innovative systems-based approach she was pioneering and writing about.

‘All of us are working in a significant time of change, and we are trying to navigate new realities across our sector.

I really enjoy helping partners think holistically and systematically about their work and applying learning approaches that help us adapt quickly, especially when the path ahead isn’t clear.’

Meet Michael Moses

Michael Moses has 15 years of experience working at the intersection of strategy, learning, and evaluation in the social impact sector. Most recently, he led the philanthropy practice at EnCompass.

Before that, he oversaw strategic learning initiatives at DAI, guiding diverse teams across the world in the use of tailored strategy and evaluation approaches to assess and address complex challenges. Michael brings expertise in using theories of change and systems thinking to drive collaborative, participatory learning processes and adaptive management.

He has significant experience in equity-focused evaluation methods, is a skilled emergent learning practitioner, and has written and spoken extensively about how to apply these approaches in practice to drive action, learning, and impact in complex systems.

Navigating complexity in ways that are action-oriented, evidence-based, and grounded in trust and relationships is central to successful social impact efforts in today’s rapidly changing world.

I’m excited to dig into this work at Itad. By helping our partners develop a shared vision of the future, stewarding quick cycles of action, learning, and adaptation, and building capacity to identify and respond to emerging signals of change together, we can make progress towards a more just and inclusive world.

– Michael Moses
