External Review of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature

Itad was selected by a group of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s framework donors to undertake an external review of IUCN.

22/11/2010

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) was founded in 1948 as the world’s first global environmental organisation, and is now the world’s oldest and largest global environmental organisation.

It is a leading authority on the environment and sustainable development with more than 1,200 member organisations (including 200+ government and 900+ non-government organisations and almost 11,000 voluntary scientists and experts, grouped in six Commissions in some 160 countries).  IUCN’s work is supported by over 1,000 staff in 45 offices and hundreds of partners in public, NGO and private sectors around the world. It is funded by governments, bilateral and multilateral agencies, foundations, member organisations and corporations and has Official Observer Status at the United Nations General Assembly.

Our role

We were selected by a group of IUCN’s framework donors including Sida and AFD to undertake an external review of IUCN. The headline, multi-country review comprised assessments of: (i) the IUCN business model and organisational strategy, (ii) the niche, relevance and effectiveness of the delivery of the IUCN programme supporting biodiversity and conservation, and, (iii) the level of engagement of IUCN’s Members and Commissions.
