The main user of water globally remains agriculture. Many Asian countries have demonstrated what can be done - increasing food production using new high yielding varieties of crops and improved water and land management practices.

With an expanding global population, power generation and environmental demands water for productive activities, such as agriculture, fishing, small scale industries and employment must now compete with other sectoral needs. The challenge faced is to create more food with less water, but not at the detriment of economic growth, employment and other sectoral needs.

ITAD understands irrigation and drainage and the relationship between agricultural water demand and river basin management; matching supply to demand, minimising downstream impacts and building on local coping mechanisms to deal with shocks to the system, such as drought, salinity and pollution issues. Although irrigation and drainage provide the majority of food in poorer nations, increasing stress on water resources, problems associated with management, operation and maintenance of the systems, and weak institutional and financial performance has created the need for Governments and organisations to understand alternative solutions.

We work at the boundaries of traditional irrigation and drainage management - helping to improve institutional and system performance through benchmarking initiatives and operational auditing services, water availability, support services and technological capability centred on adaptive management and participatory decision making.
