The natural environment underpins economic growth and development. For 'sustainable' development economic and social progress depends on maintaining base ecosystem services and a healthy environment.

This includes an understanding of the principles of intergenerational equity, the precautionary approach and biodiversity conservation, preventing and reversing adverse impacts of economic and social activities on the ecosystem, whilst allowing the sustainable and equitable development of societies. Mismanagement of natural resources has both immediate and long term detrimental effects on countries trying to build strong foundations for social and economic development.

Poverty reduction strategies must work within a framework of sustainable development to ensure environmental protection and upgrading, and to ensure that issues such as climate change are considered holistically, e.g. from the immediate direct shocks of drought and floods, to the longer term knock-on effects. ITAD works within this framework, realising the value of the environment to all and the economic costs of degradation and works to improve poverty reduction strategies. We work with senior management and decision makers to make the best use of present resources in a sustainable manner to ensure the integrity of ecosystems in the future.
