Governance presents particular challenges in rural areas due to problems with: distance, not least from seats of government; communications; provision of services to scattered and remote citizens; and traditional power relations, often linked to ownership and access to natural resources.
ITAD's expertise in rural governance relates to both our experience in working local government and community groups, and to our monitoring and evaluation work.
In Zambia and Uganda we have worked with local government to develop systems for monitoring service delivery by both governments themselves and by citizens. In Bangladesh and Nigeria we have worked with community groups, taking a political economy approach, to improve the way the rural poor can access and manage the critical natural resources on which they depend. In China we have worked with Provincial and Township governments to develop an inclusive and equitable approach to implementing poverty reduction projects, which makes real advances in the way in which government provides voice and choice to its rural people.
